Horror movies have been around since silent movies. Being scared became apparent as something audiences liked from watching a film. Horror movies had a huge revivial in the late 70's, early 80's because of films such as 'The Omen' and 'Nightmare on Elm Street'. Unfortunately this did not last and they became unpopular in the late 80's and early 90's. As society changed so did peoples fear so what was popular when silet movies were around may well not have been at the current time.
For example, when moving image was first created there was a shot of a train, this caused fear for people as they thought that the train would actually come out of the screen.
