Codes and Conventions of Film Trailers

From researching into existing horror film trailers I have learnt that the codes and conventions of a typical horror trailer are:
-> The name of the film is feautured at the end of the trailer, this will entice the viewer to watch until the end of the trailer to find out what the film is called.
-> The institutional logo is also featured at the end
-> Editing plays a huge role in establishing the genre of the film for example by using eerie sound effects and dark lighting to convey horror.
-> Don't give away the entire story, leave the viewer wanting more.
-> Villains and Victims will always be feautured
-> Isolated settings are often featured in horror movies.

The aim of a film trailer is to tell the story of a film in a minimum time but have maximum effect on the viewer enticing them to go and see the film. Trailers are used to advertise every genre of film. Even though films having different genres and plots and target audiences they all follow a similar strucure of:
1) they start with a beginning that illustrates the basic plot
2) the middle part extend the plot of the film further and usually ends with a dramatic climax, however this still doesn't give away too much about the film
3) this part usually consists of a montage of shots and music and also will feauture the names of famous actors that are featured in the film, they are feauted in this part of the trailer to help sell the movie.

Trailers are a highly condensed version of the film so sometimes voiceovers are used to ensure the spectator understands the plot exactly.
Music is used to set the tone of the film. The music is not always featured in the actual film. Music that could be used could be a famous song at the time the trailer is being shown as this will catch peoples attention or sometimes specially composed music specifically for the film itself.

Paranormal Activity Movie Poster

This is the movie poster for the film 'Paranormal Activity'. The image that is used is a screenshot of the film. It is the main setting used in the film. The image is in black and white with a lined effect across it and a blue effect so it looks like its a still from a video camera at night. A time is shown in the bottom right hand corner of the image, this portrays that it is a still of a video camera and therefore conveys how the whole film is shot. 'What happens when you sleep?' is written underneath the image, this questions the consumer. underneath the main title which is written in red; 'Paranormal Activity' it reads 'Don't see is alone' this adds to the scariness of the film and again talks directly to the consumer. 'Experience it for yourself!' is written along the bottom of the poster above the date of the cinema release and the website address. Along the top of the poster there are quotes of peoples opinions of the film such as from the 'Hollywood Independent'. These are written in blue.

Paranormal Activity Movie Trailer

Paranormal Activity Film Trailer
The trailer begins with footage of people queueing up to watch the film at a cinema. Throughout the entire trailer the viewer is watching the film with the cinema audience. The trailer is filmed through the eyes of the cinema audience. Titles come up on the screen with facts about the viewing of the film. The trailer makes the audience experience the film from the audiences point of view. This adds to the scariness of the film as it seems realistic. 'Paramount' is shown as though its on a cinema screen. The film is filmed with a handheld camera from the people in the film. This again makes it seem more realistic. There is minimal characters in the film. There is quotes that come up in the trailer of peoples opinions of the film. Diegetic sounds of the cinema audience screaming are used to add to the tension. Creepy sound effects are used as the trailer heightens to the scary parts. The pace quickens towards the end. 'Experience it for yourself' comes up as titles near the end of the trailer. 'Paranormal Activity'' comes up at the end of the trailer in white and is flickering like a camera. The dates that the film is being shown is then shown right at the end.

Teddy Bear's Picnic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZANKFxrcKU

This is the music/sound that i am considering using in my film trailer as I think it will convey a scary atmosphere and the lyrics tie in well with the brief of the film.

Sound/Music/Titles

Teddy Bear's Picnic - Lyrics

If you go down to the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go down to the woods today
You'd better go in disguise.

For ev'ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

Ev'ry teddy bear who's been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There's lots of marvelous things to eat
And wonderful games to play.

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
Cause that's the way the teddy bears have their picnic.

If you go down to the woods today
You'd better not go alone.
It's lovely down in the woods today
But safer to stay at home.

For ev'ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

Picnic time for teddy bears
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday.

See them gaily gad about
They love to play and shout;
They never have any care;

At six o'clock their mummies and daddies,
Will take them home to bed,
Because they're tired little teddy bears.

Film Trailers : Theory

I have been researching the theortetical side of film trailers. As an example I have been looking at the marketing campaign for the film 'Buried' which has just been released in the UK. I thought this would be a good film to look at as it has just been released and is also of a similar genre to the trailer that I will be making therefore I can look at the way they have marketed this film and follow similar conventions in my own trailer.

Brief Outline of the Film Industry

Production:
A small production company will form a new idea for a film. They will then have to find funding for this film which they will go to a distributor for. If the distributor likes the idea of the film they will agree to lend money to the production company in order for them to finance the making of the film. There are three main stages of production: 1. Pre-production (planning, designing, storyboarding, casting...etc.) 2. Prodcuction (the actual shooting of the film) 3. Post-production (editing the film together and adding sound and special effects)

Distribution:
The distributors are the people with the money. They are often the large studios such as Universal, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Brothers. They are wealthy and own much of the worlds media and often part of huge media conglomerates. Once the film has been produced then the distributors begin to market the film (posters, interviews, merchandide, soundtracks, trailers... etc). Seeing as the distributor leant most of the money for the film they scoop up the majority of the profit. The distributors tend to be mainly American hence why the American Film Industry dominates our screens.

Exhibition:
This refers to the showing of the film, for example:
-> Cinemas
-> DVD(rental and sales)
-> Satellite/Digital TV
-> Box Office
-> Terrestrial TV

Film Trailers must include...

1. The distribution company logo
2. The production company logo
3. The narrative establisher - a series of longer sequences which establish the general storyline of the film
4. The stars of the unique selling point - for example famous actors
5. A series of quick exciting sequences that are full of suspense for the film
6. Throughout the trailer generic conventions that will convey the correct genre of the film

History of Horror Movies

Horror movies have been around since silent movies. Being scared became apparent as something audiences liked from watching a film. Horror movies had a huge revivial in the late 70's, early 80's because of films such as 'The Omen' and 'Nightmare on Elm Street'. Unfortunately this did not last and they became unpopular in the late 80's and early 90's. As society changed so did peoples fear so what was popular when silet movies were around may well not have been at the current time.
For example, when moving image was first created there was a shot of a train, this caused fear for people as they thought that the train would actually come out of the screen.

My Chosen Genre

I have decided to choose the genre of horror for my trailer. I will have to follow specific codes and conventions of horror films and research into existing horror trailers thoroghly. For example, some of the conventions of horror trailers that I will use will be: darkness, victims, music,tension and leaving the audience asking questions. Horror films are designed to create all kinds of emotions such as fear and terror I will strive to do this when I come to create my trailer.
